Scenario: 1871 Black Death Plague breaks out in Yunnan, China. It's spreading fast, so we must act fast to save the whole world!
We have been commissioned by the Qing Dynasty government to sail our fleet of ships into the South China Sea in search of plants on remote islands used to make and improve medicine to stop the plague. We have 18 months to complete our mission and return, otherwise it will be too late. Each month is only two minutes long in real time.
Our port of departure is Hainan Island, located on the map (right side) block A1 and A2.
We must sail our ships to Malaysia and Mindanao to gather the special plants needed. Each of these islands has one type of plant. We need to gather both kinds in more-or-less equal amounts as a TEAM.
Movement is one block per month in the water, and must remain on an island one month to collect one ton of needed plants (e.g. two months = two tons).
In the center of the map is a "Typhoon Zone", which is where a menacing typhoon roams back and forth, sometimes unpredictable.
To make matters even worse, there are pirates in the South China Sea as well, patrolling well-known trade routes in search of ships carrying GOLD.
Nevertheless, we must stay focused on our mission to Save the World!
Let's examine our resources:
Each group represents one ship. The Fleet Admiral has provided each group with a ship similar to the one shown to the right.
Each ship is capable of carrying all needed supplies, as well as the amount of plants needed to complete our mission.
In addition to a ship, each group is outfitted with the following resources:
- Gold, to purchase needed resources, as islanders probably won't accept our cash (pirates also want your GOLD)
- Food, enough to eat for most of the journey
- Water, very much needed on a ship!
- Lifesavers, just in case you're in the water
There are other optional items discussed below, available for a price.
- Rowboat, just in case item. Some ships like to have them
- Certain information from officers at Fleet HQ and Phu Qui Island (enroute)
Weather and typhoons are another issue. In the case of hot weather, the crew drinks more water; and in the case of cold weather, the crew eats more food.
If your ship enters an area where the typhoon is active, your ship cannot move until the typhoon departs the area, though your crew continues to consume resources each and every month.
As the months fly by, facing weather issues, fending off pirates and gathering needed plants, the tension mounts.
The event ends after Month 18, and then the results are calculated, based on each ship's actual performance.
This leads to a rather cool celebration as the fleet's results are debriefed.
Debrief is followed by a serious discussion by each ship on how they could have performed better, and which ways they would change if presented the opportunity to do it again (this part is optional, but recommended, depending on time requirements and desired outcomes).
