Structured OJT

OJT SME HandbookOn-the-Job Training (OJT) is the oldest form of human beings teaching others how to perform tasks.

CATEGORY: Critical Competencies, Structured OJT
WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE: All staff
METHODOLOGY: Lecture, discussion, in-class activities, lots of group work, analysis and training practice
LANGUAGE: Chinese, English or bilingual (current version exists in Chinese only)
DURATION: .5 to 3 Days

ALTEC uses OJT as a primary management tool to:

  • Reduce or eliminate human error in the work center
  • Improve or eliminate on-the-job injuries
  • Guarantee consistent product output among a group of workers performing the same job tasks
  • Formulate and develop a "standardized" and "structured" method for workers to teach others to perform tasks "error-free"

ALTEC has two basic OJT training series, one simple and one complex.

The complex system was written by Michael Nelson based on his 23 years of Air Force experience as an aircrew trainer and evaluator.

This complex system can only be partially simplified to truly achieve breakthrough results. This is due to the need for comprehensive task analysis and training design for complex tasks.

There is good news, though!

345 Online OJTFor simpler tasks, ALTEC has a simplified version that focuses on OJT Trainer skills only, which can be applied in cases where tasks are not too complex and the trainer needs to quickly train new employees to perform simpler tasks.

This method is based on the OJT Trainer steps contained in the complex method, and is converted into simpler language that any operator on the production line can understand and relate to.

Note: Online means "on the production line" as opposed to offline, which means not on the live production floor.

Even the simpler system needs some task analysis and training design. So, it's really up to the client to determine which method is needed at which job positions, and how much the OJT Trainers need to know to get up to speed as trainers.

Note: If someone is great at their job, it does not mean they possess training skills to effectively train others to do their job(s).

Need-to-Know OJT Terms:

  • Subject Matter Expert
    This is an extremely effective and experience worker, the BEST at the job. ALTEC prefers to work with teams of three SMEs for the purpose of comprehensive task analysis, training program design and training materials development. For many workers, SME tasks are very difficult to perform at first, but the method can be learned.
  • OJT Trainer
    A qualified worker that trains others to perform job tasks in the work center.
  • OJT Evaluator
    Highly qualified SME-level worker that designs and develops evaluation packages, and also conducts evaluations on already trained workers for job certification purposes.
  • Instructional Systems Design (ISD)
    A five-step process: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation
