Creative Problem Solving (Advanced Systematic Inventive Thinking)

Purpose: Why be Creative?

Process: Advanced Systematic Inventive Thinking (ASIT) is a new and powerful methodology used to find creative solutions. The ASIT method was developed by Dr. Roni Horowitz, and has been proven effective in companies around the world.

  • Participants will learn a new method for approaching and finding creative solutions to common work-related problems, saving significant time and money
  • The creative problem solving method will give participants immediately usabletools and let them practice with real-world challenges from their workplace.

Course Outline:

  • Introduction to the Creative Problem Solving process
  • Three examples of creative problem solving:
  • Analysis: he person, the process and the result Case study: The antenna
  • 4 Principles: similarity, uniqueness, ideality, the problem is the solution
  • Conditions for creative solutions: closed world and qualitative change
  • Applying closed world and qualitative change principles – two case studies
  • Analysis of ideas and summary
  • Company case number one: (TBD) identifying problem objects and environment objects
  • Framing the problem world and solution world
  • Discovering best closed-world solutions
  • Presentations by each group
  • Repeat with company case study

Course Agenda

Day 1 Morning:

  • Welcome, Introduction
  • Intended result, Outcomes, Managing expectation
  • Icebreaker game: Random Word
  • In this game, participants use random word association to create new pathways to solve a current problem, then present their findings to the group

  • Introduction to the Creative Problem Solving process
  • Three examples of creative problem solving:
    • The Volkswagon Windshield Washer Problem
    • The Prudenia Pest Problem
    • Controlling shoppers speed while shopping
    • Optional: The Burger King Problem

Analysis: The person, the process and the result

Day 1 Afternoon Case study: The Antenna Problem

  • 4 Principles: Similarity, Uniqueness, Ideality, the Problem is the Solution
  • Conditions for creative solutions: Closed World and Qualitative Change Conditions

Day 2 Morning: Review Day 1

  • Creativity exercise: 9-dot puzzle
  • In this game, participants are presented with a simple puzzle and specific rules within which they must solve it
  • Applying closed world and qualitative change Conditions – two case studies:
    • Crowd control
    • Pollution control
    • Analysis of ideas and summary

Day 2 Afternoon: Company Case Number One:

  • Identifying the problem - simple problem statement
  • Formulating desired outcome - simple solution statement
  • Identifying all objects in the Problem World
  • Graph existing relationship between problem and a problem object
  • Apply Qualitative Change
  • Apply Unification to achieve desired outcome
  • Group presentations
  • Summary and conclusion

Note: The basic structure of this workshop is to introduce participants to truly breakthrough thinking by following a seemingly mechanical process. Qualitative Change is the hardest principle to grasp, and once this happens, the rest of ASIT is easy.

Groups are provided with an ASIT Toolbox (available in the Downloads section of this site for free use) while solving their own company problems.
